Function N() = Insert Comment: TRUE or FALSE

When we return to our workbook created some time ago and try to revive/use it, it quite often happens that we've forgotten what we had intended to achieve by composing some complex formulas or entering even simple data points. We can avoid such situations in the future by adding comments or notes to some cell contents.

The Insert Comment feature is OK, but in most cases the better choice is to use the N() function, as illustrated below:

As you can see, the N() function added to the formula in cell E2 is visible in the Formula Bar, but hidden in the cell, so it doesn't distract your attention. Whatever text/reference you enter within the N function parentheses is converted to 0 (zero), so it doesn't effect the cell value.

This way we can easily see our reminder. It's a very good replacement for the Insert Comment feature.

By the way, the TRUE value entered in G3 and referenced in the E2 formula, returns 1, so cell E2 displays 5.55744 instead of 6.55744.

You may also find out 😉 that when you enter the formula =100-2*TRUE into a cell, it returns 98, but =100-2*FALSE returns 100.
